Issue No. 38

Christmas 2009

Christmas Lights Firstly, many congratulations to St Wilfrid’s Hospice, the Heathfield and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce and the Heathfield Partnership for organising the successful family day and switching on of the Christmas Lights. The Parish Council are pleased to help by providing funding towards the cost of annual maintenance and erection of the column displays. Many traders have added their individual displays and it all helps to make the town look very festive and hopefully encourage more people to shop locally.

We wish to thank the staff and pupils of Parkside CP School for decorating the office window so beautifully and our Contractors, C and E Davis Limited for erecting and decorating the Christmas tree on the forecourt.

High Street Bus Shelter The Parish Council are very relieved that the new bus shelter in the High Street was finally installed on 3 December. Thank you to those of you who waited so patiently and to those of you who were rather more disgruntled, please rest assured that the delay was entirely out of our control. The new shelter is more enclosed, as many of you requested, and we hope that it will be put to good use, particularly in the current inclement weather!

No Cold Calling Zone   No formal objections were received to the proposed No Cold Calling Zone, following the consultation letter which was delivered to all our parishioners in the Autumn.   We are currently seeking approval for the signs to be erected on the key access routes into the parish and it is proposed to officially launch the campaign on the afternoon of Tuesday 19 January 2010. Further details will be available in due course.

CCTV The Parish Council have agreed in principle to make funding of £25,000 available in the next financial year towards the provision of three CCTV cameras in the town. This initiative is supported by Sussex Police and it is proposed to have mobile Stryker cameras which will be monitored from Heathfield Police Station. The system will be broadly similar to the one used in Uckfield.   The next step will be to secure the remainder of the funding with a view to the cameras being installed next year.

Budget for 2010/2011 financial year All the Committees have been hard at work setting out their spending plans for the next financial year. Each year this task gets harder, with more and more requests for funding being received from groups and organisations operating within the parish. This is in addition to the costs of maintaining all the Council’s facilities, including sports pitches, recreation grounds, burial ground, allotments, seats, litter bins, bus shelters and much more. We are very aware of the current financial pressures being experienced by many of our parishioners and the demands upon the Council Tax will be kept at as low a level as possible.

Heathfield Skatepark Official Opening The newly refurbished skatepark will be officially opened on Saturday 12 December. The wonderful new equipment and landscaping have been paid for by means of grants from Play Pathfinder and Youth Opportunity Funding. A big thank you to everyone involved in the project, but particularly Councillor Mike Woodhouse and Beata Drury from Heathfield Youth Centre. A group of enthusiastic skaters from the Youth Centre have been actively involved in every step of the process, from initial design to helping to secure the funding.

The Parish Council hope that the opening event will be well attended and that all the skaters and BMX riders in the parish have an opportunity to enjoy the new facilities.

Christmas Greetings Finally, on behalf of all the Members and Officers of the Parish Council, may I wish you a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
